Diane von Furstenberg Partners With The Empowerment Plan
The Empowerment Plan, a Detroit-based nonprofit organization focused on serving the homeless community, recently announced a $50,000 matching campaign with Diane von Furstenberg (DVF) to help employ two single mothers from homeless shelters. The Empowerment Plan hires single mothers from local shelters and trains them to become full time seamstresses so that they can earn a stable income, find secure housing, and gain back their independence for themselves and their families. These women manufacture The Empowerment Plan’s innovative winter coats: a durable, water-resistant and self-heating coat that transforms into a sleeping bag and can be worn as an over-the-shoulder bag when not in use.
The Empowerment Plan currently employs 23 previously homeless individuals, all of whom have been able to successfully transition from the shelter to a home of their own. In addition to employment and a steady income. They do so by offering other programs and services to ensure all employees are able to achieve their personal and professional goals.
The Empowerment Plan was first recognized by DVF when its founder, Veronika Scott, was honored with the DVF’s People’s Voice Award in 2014. The DVF Awards, created by Diane and the Diller-von Furstenberg Family Foundation, honor and support extraordinary women who have had the courage to fight, the power to survive and the leadership to inspire.
“The Empowerment Plan is so important because it gives women the tools they need to help themselves. When you empower a woman, you can change the world,” said Diane von Furstenberg.
